How Can I Care for My Nails at Home?

How often should I wash my hair?

Washing your hair too often can strip your scalp of all your natural oils. Whilst many of us are working from home, why not take advantage of not heading into the office and only wash your hair every few days.

If you suffer from oily, fine hair, we recommend making your shampoo go longer by using Goldwellโ€™s Ultra Volume Dry Shampoo in between washes. Also, applying dry shampoo before working out, helps absorb oils produced during exercise.

Goldwellโ€™s Ultra Volume Dry Shampoo contains Rice protein, which is known for its strengthening effect, adding volume for fine and limp hair without compromising on shine.

How to use:

  1. Work dry shampoo through dry hair by spraying directly onto the roots and mid-lengths at a distance of about 30cms.
  2. Then brush it out. Or for curly hair, use your fingers to work dry shampoo into the roots.

Tangled hair? Split ends?

Whilst we’re closed and you can’t get that haircut that you’re desparate for, we have a couple of our favourite tips to deal with those split ends and tangles:

๐Ÿ’ฆ Remove excess water from your hair before applying conditioner to ensure that it works deep into the hair. You can either squeeze our excess water using your hands, or if you have a towel nearby, a quick pat to take out excess water will work a treat.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Always comb your conditioner through while itโ€™s on your hair and rinse thoroughly as this will really reduce tangling when you come to comb through before styling! This will also help smooth the cuticle and prevent further split ends appearing.

Our number one favourite shampoo and conditioner for a hydrating and detangling boost is Moisture Recovery in the Joico Range!

Moisture Recovery Shampoo and conditioner reduces breakage by up to 55%, it intensely nourishes dry hair and adds softness, smoothness, and shine.

How to use:

  1. Apply a 50 pence size amount of Moisture Recovery Shampoo to wet hair.
  2. Lather and Rinse.
  3. Follow with Moisture Recovery Conditioner to mid lengths and ends.
  4. Leave on for 2-5 minutes.
  5. Comb through and rinse thoroughly.

What hair treatment can I use at home?

You can also use the time around the house to pop on an Olaplex No.3 home-treatment, letting it soak in for longer for maximum results. Olaplex No.3 is a treatment, not a conditioner, that reduces breakage and visibly strengthens hair, improving its look and feel. It will restore your hair’s healthy appearance and texture by repairing damage from the inside out and protecting hair structure.

Olaplex is suitable for all hair types, it is vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free and nut-free!

How to use:

  1. Apply a generous amount from root to ends on damp, towel-dried hair.
  2. Comb through once and then leave on for a minimum of 10minutes. The longer this is left on, the better the results.
  3. Rinse from your hair, and then shampoo and condition as normal.

Once all the bonds are intact and in alignment, you have healthy, beautiful, shiny, touchable hair.

My fringe desperately needs a trim โ€“ can I do anything?

Our stylists suggest that if you are struggling with a growing-out fringe, try sweeping it to one side or into a centre parting. If your fringe has a tendency to flop into your face, then use a styling product to keep it in its place!

Also, if you really feel the need to trim your fringe while we are closed, always take off less than required, as fringes jump up with styling. When trimming, make sure you avoid cutting it away from your face – pull it down taught, close to your forehead.

The Layers in my haircut are so long now that the weight pulls them down and leaves my hair flat, without volume โ€“ any tips?

Our stylists recommend blow drying your hair upside down. There are many root sprays on the market, but we loveย Joicoโ€™s Volumizer range as it gives great body and bounce without sticky or crunchy residue. It instantly transforms fine hair into full, luxurious, natural-looking hair.

In addition to adding volume and life to your hairstyle, it also provides long-lasting humidity protection and shine.

How to use:

  1. Apply 1-2 pumps into hands.
  2. Work evenly throughout hair
  3. Blow-dry to activate fullness and lift.

If you are really struggling with volume, you can also try a little back combing to tease the roots, but wouldnโ€™t recommend doing this daily to avoid cuticle damage. Finish off with light spray gel or hairspray to hold the extra weight.

We love Goldwell Spray Forte Hairspray, this limited edition hairspray is super lightweight with incredible hold.

How can I stop my hair colour fading?

The best advice to maintain your hair colour is to wash your hair less frequently. Try rinsing your hair with cold water at the end of your shower to smooth out the cuticles and give a shiny appearance.

Protect Your Hair From Heat

Always protect your hair from heat styling with a good serum like Joicoโ€™s KPAK Protect and Shine Serum. Joico K-Pak Protect & Shine Serum protects, polishes and seals the cuticle while helping to prevent split ends and frizz.

How to Use:

  1. Using ยฝ to 3 drops of serum, emulsify in your hands.
  2. Distribute through damp or dry hair, concentrating on the mid lengths and ends.

Cool Down Brassy Blondes

To brighten those brassy blondes as your toner fades out, then we recommend Joico’s Blonde Life Violet Shampoo & Conditioner. The Violet pigments in these products help to lighten and brighten dull and brassy blondes whilst adding shine and dimension.

How to use:

  1. Apply Shampoo to wet hair.
  2. Lather.
  3. Leave in 1-3 minutes.
  4. Rinse.
  5. Follow with Blonde Life Violet Conditioner.
  6. Use 2-3 times per week to maintain cool tones.

Can I colour my hair at home?

We advise against colouring your hair at home, as box dyes can interfere with your bespoke salon colour. Often leaving banding and colour buildup. If you find your hair is dull and lifeless now the colour is growing out, we can suggest products that wonโ€™t compromise your hair colour when the salons are open again.

We recommend trying a Goldwell Soft Color Mousse, which will just revive your colour temporarily whilst we are closed.

They have a whopping 22 shades, perfectly aligned with the complete Goldwell color assortment. So just ask us which colour would match your salon colour.

Using Goldwellโ€™s Soft Color Mousse, you will get shiny, colour refreshed results in just 5 minutes processing time. This is a semi-permanent colour, that lasts 6-8 washes.

How to Use:

  1. Shampoo your hair.
  2. Add the mousse to your conditioner.
  3. Leave for 5-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse off.

My hair has become dull and lifeless – how can I make it shiny again?

If you are after some shine, Goldwellโ€™s Diamond Gloss Protect & Shine Spray is amazing when blow dried into hair. It effectively blocks humidity for up to 72 hrs, provides colour and heat protection thanks to FlexPROtec technology. It tames frizz and provides intense shine, for a silky smooth touch and glossy surface.

How to use:

  1. Spray onto dry hair mainly on mid lengths and ends for intense shine.
  2. Can also be used during styling with straighteners, or curling stylers.

My roots are starting to come through, what should I do to help cover them?

We know that those pesky root are the bane of your life. If you are trying to cover grey regrowth or your natural colour regrowth, we really love Colour WOW Root Cover Powder. It available in lots of colours, it is waterproof and really easy to apply.

Root touch up powder covers grey seamlessly, even covers dark roots and extends highlights. Color Wow gives your precise application, with no mess like root cover up sprays. Itโ€™s not sticky or waxy and looks completely natural. It is water-resistant and you can even swim in it!

My nails are missing their manicure โ€“ what can I do to keep them in good condition?

Monika suggests some good tips for natural nails – Give them a simple manicure and use a good nail strengthener. We are big fans of the OPI strengthener, to replenish natural nails between your gel polish manicures. Itโ€™s also beneficial to use a good hand cream and cuticle oil as well, especially while we are all washing our hands so often and using anti-bacterial gel.

For Healthy Cuticles

For healthy cuticles Monika recommends using almond oil, or OPI Prospa Nail & Cuticle Oil which contains a wonderful concoction of Cupuacu butter, Aocado lipid complex, white tea, grape seed, kukui & sunflower oils, all to help condition cuticles.

How to use:

  1. Gently drop over cuticles to help nourish and massage in.
  2. ProSpa oil is very versatile โ€“ use it on your knees, elbows, heels and add it into your daily body moisturizer for extra intensity.

For Strong Nails

For strong nails, Monika recommends OPI Nail Envy Original Formula. This provides maximum strengthening with hydrolysed wheat protein and calcium for harder, longer, stronger, natural nails.

How to use:

  1. Apply two coats to your bare nails.
  2. Then apply one coat every other day to maintain your treatment.
  3. You can also use Nail Envy over lacquer so there are no excuses for not getting nails to envy!

As weโ€™ve been in lockdown so long, we appreciate that gel nail polish and eyelash extensions have grown out. Head over to our previous blogs, where Monika gives some tips on Removing Gel Nail Polish Safely at Home & Removing Eyelash Extensions Safely at Home.
