A Photobook for Mother’s day – Where to begin?

This year on Mother’s Day you want to get your mum something special. No more useless things for the kitchen, or flowers and chocolates. You want something unique, that she’ll know how much you love and appreciate her and she’ll treasure it forever.

A Photobook! Great Choice!

But where do you start? What kind of photobook? Which pictures should you include?

Let me help you and answer some of those questions, that will make it easier for you to create the perfect photobook for your mum.

The first step in planning a photobook we already established. The theme of the photobook is Mother’s day.

I suggest starting looking for pictures and collecting them around six weeks before the big day. But you can manage with any time frame you’ve got. Make separate folders on your computer/laptop or a separate album on your phone. Dedicate them to pictures you want to include in the photobook.

Now, the million-dollar question is: which photos to include?

There are several ways you can tell your mum’s story in her photobook.

Tell her life story

In this option, you are telling your Mum’s life story through the pictures. You want to include pictures from when she was little, up to the present day. You want to make sure she will be in most of the pictures. Start the photobook with photos from when she was a little girl. Try to find a few pictures of her as a baby with her mum.

Then, pictures of her growing up as a child, such as family gatherings, school, holidays, trips, and other adventures. Move on to her as a young adult with friends, university, wedding, honeymoon, any pictures you can find.

Then, pictures of her adult life with her children, grandchildren, work, friends, hobbies, and holidays. You can also include captions to explain what is in the pictures. And include cards she keeps, poems, letters, tickets to shows she went, and any other keepsake she has. You can scan them or just take a picture of them with your phone.

Tell her family story

The children and grandchildren mean the most to mum, right? In this case, you can start with a few pictures of her childhood. Some pictures of important events such as the wedding. Then, the rest of the photobook will be about the children and grandchildren. You can dedicate a few pages for each child/grandchild. Or arrange the photos by date, showing them growing up over the years.

The next step is to think about the features of the photobook. Do you prefer a square size or a rectangle? What would you like on the cover, an image? Some kind of material? What colours does she like? There are plenty of options depending on the app or website you are using to print the photobook.

Once you gathered all the photos and information, made all the decisions, you need to fill in the pages with your photos. I am most definitely not suggesting this part is quick or easy, but when you have everything ready, it makes it a lot easier.

The most important thing is to enjoy it! Enjoy creating the photobook. Enjoy looking for pictures and finding out things about your mum and her upbringing. And enjoy looking through your memories as a family.

I can’t wait to hear your mother’s reaction to the photobook.

Happy Mother’s day!
